Helmet crest of a "Tyi Wara" Mask - The Bambara people (Mali) left: wood - L: 70 cm H: 64 cm right: H: 73 cm - Musée Dapper

Representing the hippotragus, an antelope symbolozing valor, these mask crests were attached to a wicker skull-cap. They were worn in mystery plays representing the great Bambaras myths.
