Black diorite

STATUE OF KHONSOUIRAA

Black diorite.
Height. 43.5 cm, width 12.6 cm, depth 13.5 cm.
Provenance: probably Karnak.
Acquired in 1907 by the James Fund.
End of the XXVth Dynasty, 670 - 660 B.C.
Boston Museum of Fine Arts, No. 07.494.

Even though the wig and ornaments are missing, the statue of Khonsouiraa makes it clearly apparent that there is another "ethnic" specificity of Koush art: the extreme smallness of the head in relation to the body. The statue of Khonsouiraa takes it place chronologically at the end of the Koush Dyansty. Its title, "Priest of Amon", links this dignitary to the area of Thebes.
