Cincinatti - Scenes from the city life: By Barney Simon
JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA  •  Laager Theatre  •  19 August - 13 September 2015

Barney Simon: Cincinatti - Scenes from the city life
Directed by Clive Mathibe

This classic theatre play takes the audience back to a time and place where laws were unfair, where injustice was the ruler and people were intolerant due to a lack of knowledge of other’s beliefs, religions and cultures.

The play explores the life of nine very different and culturally diverse characters who have one thing in common; Club Sin Sin- as they affectionately referred to the club. The characters in the play are passionate about Club Sin Sin because it’s about the only place where there’s freedom of expression during the harsh and inhumane laws of South Africa in the 1970’s; Club Sin Sin was one of the only few clubs in the disco days of the 70’s in Johannesburg and South Africa where people of all races and class could party together in the height of apartheid South Africa; “White hippies dancing with straight black businessmen. Company directors dancing with domestic servants.”

Crepuscule: By Can Themba
JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA  •  The Market Theatre  •  11 July - 2 August 2015

Can Themba: Crepuscule
Adapted and directed by Khayelihle Dom Gumede

Khayelihle Dom Gumede created this play by adapting Themba’s short story Crepuscule, which is believed to be a fictional interpretation of Themba’s real life love affair with a white woman, Jean Hart, during the 1950s. Set in the often revered and romanticised world of Sophiatown, the play asks a range of pertinent and contemporary socio-political questions. Themba and Hart’s illicit relationship serves as a means to unpack how much of our identity is formed by our environment and how much is shaped by our choices as individuals. Crepuscule is a story about human connection and a search for freedom and humanity in a world that sought to deny it.
