The North Carolina Azalea Festival celebrates the blooming of one of the South's signature flowers. Azaleas by the millions fill the Cape Fear Coast with color. Festival highlights include the opening ceremony and Queen's coronation, a three-hour parade, two-day street fair, the Superheroes of the Circus, home and garden tours, boxing matches, a horse show, the Festival Coin Show where some 45 dealers come and present their coins. This year's entertainment and celebrities include Little Big Town, Colbie Caillat, Kevin Frazier, Michelle Branch and the U.S. Marine Boxing Team.

Festival visitors can browse the more than thirty-five food vendors stretching from Red Cross Street to Dock Street offering something for every taste, from alligator tail to funnel cakes. Foodies can also shop at the Poplar Grove Farmer's Market and Plantation that carries a fresh selection of in-season and locally grown fruits & vegetables, plus plants, cut flowers, cheese, sausage, crab cakes, baked goods, nuts, pickles, herbs, honey and more. The Annual Juried Spring Art Show and Sale showcases over 100 North Carolina artists.

Incidentally, for those visiting North Carolina, Democratic presidential contenders Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton have been invited to hold a nationally televised debate in North Carolina. CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric and political correspondent and Face the Nation host Bob Schieffer would  moderate the April 19 TV debate.

Senator Obama had accepted, and the network is awaiting word on whether Senator Clinton would participate. Its location has yet to be determined, although Wake Forest University has notified the N.C. Democratic Party that it would like to host the debate. Thus far, Senator John Edwards of North Carolina, a Democrat who dropped out of the presidential race, has endorsed neither Senator Barack Obama, nor Senator Hillary Clinton.

North Carolina with 134 delegates will vote on May 6.
