Sargent and Italy explores the unique relationship between the American artist John Singer Sargent, born in Florence in 1856 to expatriate American parents, and Italy. The exhibition, which complements important works by Sargent in LACMA’s permanent collection, consists of more than 75 paintings.
The exhibition features Sargent’s works from Capri and Venice and the Alps, including his well-known cashmere series. Also on view are works created in Carrara and San Vigilio, watercolors and oils depicting gardens in Tuscany and Rome, as well as paintings of art and architecture. The show closes with works created in Venice and portraits painted while the artist was on holiday in Italy.
