Travel Tip: Art and Archaeology in Germany The Greek Classical Period
The Greek Classical Period : Illusion or Reality. GERMANY BERLIN • Martin-Gropius-Bau • Ongoing
Some 600 objects from museums around the world present an era of ancient Greece that had an enormous influence far beyond Greece itself. Only a few generations after it was created, Greek – and above all Athenian – literature, architecture and visual art of the 5th century BC was considered exemplary and the standard against which the arts were to be measured.
The city of Athens during the 5th century BC will be the focal point of interest – it is from here that the greatest number of objects have been preserved. Public monuments of marble and bronze, elements of famous temples on the Acropolis, clay vessels with pictures of the daily life of Athenian citizens can be seen side by side with findings from graves and from the workshops of artists and artisans as well as traces of the lives of foreigners and slaves.
