Sigurd Frosterus (18761956) was a Finnish proponent of European architectural rationalism. He adopted new Continental European concepts of architecture while working in the office of the world-famous Art Nouveau architect Henry van de Velde in Weimar in 1903-1904. Frosterusıs entry in the 1904 competition for the Helsinki Railway Station is regarded as the most significant work of Art Nouveau in Finnish architecture. Frosterus was prominently opposed to national-romantic architecture, which he regarded as outmoded.
In his architecture he developed rational solutions suited to Nordic conditions for the project at hand. Though not following the fashions of the day, his buildings combined function with architectonic beauty. This showing presents his works ranging from his school projects to apartment buildings, manor houses, industrial facilities and his main work, the Stockmann department store in Helsinki.
