Sibelius complex

During the first decades of the twentieth century, Finnish composers suffered from a Sibelius complex and as such very little music of long-lasting value was composed. However, in the last thirty years, there has been an explosion of new music in Finland. Centralized and generous, the Finnish music education system has not only produced world-class performers such as conductors Esa-Pekka Salonen, Jukka-Pekka Saraste and Leif Segerstam, pianist Olli Mustonen, and soprano Monica Groop, but also composers such as those heard on from Scandinavia. These talented musicians met at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, forming a critical mass of creative resources. Of particular importance for the composers were the chamber orchestra AVANTI! and the Toimii Instrumental Ensemble, both devoted to contemporary music.
