Concert Spirituel From 1725 to the fateful events of 1789, the Concert Spirituel provided an estimated 1300 public concerts of sacred and instrumental music. It was the astute idea of the court musician Philidor (1681 - 1728), who organised concerts on days when theatres were traditionally closed for religious observances, notably during Lent. A plausible secondary reason was in order not to rain on the parade of the lavish opera performances by the Académie Royale de Musique, the official state-funded Paris Opéra. |
