By Donna Maria Chandler NEW YORK, 3 AUGUST 2007 The Smithsonian Institution has partnered with HarperCollins Publishers in creating board books for very young children that are brightly colored, have a single object on each page and engage young children in learning key facts by asking an open-ended question. Karen Carr has written and illustrated My Dinosaur Book for infants and toddlers. This book can be read to infants who will enjoy the colorful illustrations and the emotional connection between them and the adult who is reading the story. Toddlers will delight in this developmentally engaging book because they: are fascinated by dinosaurs; can master use of big words like Stegosaurus, Parasaurolophus, Triceratops, Edmontonia, Sinornithosaurus, Apatosaurus and Stegoceras; and the key facts on each dinosaur is presented as an open-ended question which invites children to connect the text with the illustrations. Karen Carr previously illustrated a book on Texas dinosaurs called Lone Star Dinosaurs, written by paleontologist Dr. Louis Jacobs. Her dinosaur murals are on display in museums and universities throughout the southwestern United States. My Baby Animal Book written by Stuart P. Levine will delight infants and toddlers. Each page has a brightly colored photo of a baby animal with an accompanying page that poses an open-ended question encouraging toddlers to guess the name of the baby animal. The power of this board book, are the photos where each baby animal is looking directly at the reader inviting them to interact with the story while learning facts about each animal using age appropriate information. These are stories that you and your children will read over and over again but the importance of these two board books are that they are providing young children with an engaging entry into the world of science.
