BOOK REVIEW: STELLA ADLER ON AMERICA'S MASTER PLAYWRIGHTS

By Joseph Romero

NEW YORK, 14 APRIL 2013 — Clearly the best book on American theatre to appear in 2012, acting guru Stella Adler's in-your-face lectures are not only an exuberant guide to the work of Eugene O'Neil, Thornton Wilder, Tennessee Williams, Clifford Odets, Arthur Miller and Edward Albee, but they often demonstrate an uncanny grasp of the American character. In his Apologia and Acknowledgements, the collection's editor, Barry Paris, writes that because of Adler's sudden death five weeks earlier, he and Adler never finalised their selection of American playwrights for this volume. Still, it would have been interesting to include the names of those who did not make the cut during earlier discussions. Moreover, since Mr. Paris is based in Pittsburgh, one cannot help but wonder if and where the iconic African-American works of August Wilson figured in all this. Essential reading for actors, theatre and film buffs, journalists and drama critics, and anyone else with a serious interest in American history and culture.
