International Comedy Festival
This year's Guest
6 April 1999 - Melburnians and visitors to the Victorian capital are
rocking with laughter as the city's annual International Comedy Festival
gets under way. The Festival which started 1 April runs until 25 April
When the Festival began in 1987, it was very much a grass
roots organisation, springing from the abundance of comic talent in
Australia (particularly Melbourne). Public demand for access to
Australian and international comedy at its finest, and the local comedy
community's desire to shine a spotlight on what they have in the city
and celebrate it, did the rest.
Melburnians love comedy. The
pubs, clubs, cabarets and back bars of the city are an extraordinarily
fertile breeding ground for funny people.
Even the Melbourne
Town Hall, once the no-mess fortress of the ruling class City Fathers,
has embraced the role of Comedy Festival Fun Palace and becomes an
overflowing Comedy Central every April.
In 1998, the Festival
presented over 1700 perfermances by some 1500 artists during 120
different events. Over 350,000 visitors attended the Festival which also
got wide television coverage.
A vast programme of Australian
and international events await this year's visitors including one-man
shows, films, music and theatre.
Until 25 April 1999
