Giorgio Morandi
LUGANO, SWITZERLAND  •  Museo d'Arte di Lugano  •  10 March - 1 July 2012

Known primarily for his compositions of bottles and other simple objects from daily life, Giorgio Morandi's (1890-1964) work is based upon meticulous, near-obsessive research. While on the surface his art may appear repetitive, a closer inspection reveals an extraordinary power of expression and a unique depth of analysis.

Some one-hundred works are included in the exhibition, covering all the stages of his original, creative journey, testifying to the extreme sensitivity he applied to the many techniques and themes he engaged with throughout his entire career: from the oil paintings to the watercolours, from the drawings to the engravings; from the well-known still-life paintings to the landscapes and flowers, with the addition of his most important Self-Portrait.

A high proportion of the works on display come from Italian and Swiss collections, many of which were first assembled by the insightful friends, collectors, and reviewers whom Morandi aimed his creations at. The exhibition also features works by Stuart Arends, Bernd and Hilla Becher, Lawrence Carroll, Craigie Horsfield, Franco Vimercati, and Rachel Whiteread artists who have taken up Morandi’s legacy and whose works reassert the extraordinary modernity of Morandi's art.
