Whether one loves it or hates it, the summer Salzburg Festival remains one of the most important events in classical music. Ever since the hotly contested mandate of Gérard Mortier, the festival has opened up to artists and repertoire often neglected in the past. Ticket and hotel reservations are booked well in advance and are expensive. Mozart's Don Giovanni, Die Zauberflöte, Alexander Zemlinksy's Der König Kandaules, Puccini's Turandot, Gounod's Roméo et Juliette, Helmut Lachenmann's Mädchen mit den Schwefelhölzern, a Wagner Gala (Die Walkure: First act, Parsifal: Second Act)are among the opera offerings. Concerts and solo recitals include Vienna Philiharmonic, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden, Mariinsky-Kirov Orchestra, Bernard Haitink, Riccardo Chailly, Claudio Abbado, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Martha Argerich, Alfred Brendel, Gidon Kremer, Maxim Vengerov, Kent Nagano, Valery Gergiev, Thomas Hampson, Jessye Norman, Waltraud Meier, Plácido Domingo, Maurizio Pollini, Renée Fleming, José Carreras, Krystian Zimerman, James Levine, Roberto Alagna, Samuel Ramey, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Olga Borodina, Angela Gheorghiu, Marc Minkowski, Tokyo String Quartet, Borodin Quartett, Mischa Maisky among others.
