Created in 1989, this international festival with a Russian accent is located in the enchanting medieval town of Colmar in the heart of the Alsace region of France. This year's festival is a tribute to the Polish composer and conductor, Krzysztof Penderecki, for his 70th birthday. The Polish composer will conduct his own compositions as well as those of his favourite composers, from Beethoven to Shostakovich. A number of important Polish musicians will perform in this year's festival including the Sinfonia Varsovia Chamber Orchestra, the pianists, violinists and vocalists: Antoni Wit, Piotr Anderszewski, Piotr Paleczny and Ewa Kupiec.
Apart from the concerts by Vladimir Spivakov, The Russian National Orchestra, Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra,
Patrick Gallois, flutist, Barry Douglas and Alexandre Guindine, pianists, David Geringas and Tatiana Vassilieva, cellists, Paul Meyer and Michel Lethiec, clarinettists
and others, travellers should visit the Unterlinden Museum (1232). A former convent, it now houses works of art dating back to the end of the Middle Ages, notably the Issenheim Altarpiece, painted by Mathias Grunwald in 1515.
