A lavish affair of interest to style editors as well as the art community, Art Basel Miami Beach continues its pitch as the North American winter edition of Art Basel, the world’s largest and most important trade fair for modern and contemporary art held in Switzerland each June.
The core of Art Basel Miami Beach is composed of 200 leading art galleries from North America, Latin America, Europe, Africa and Asia are presenting 20th and 21st century art works by over 1500 artists.
In addition, there will be one-person presentations by young artists, a video lounge and art projects located in public spaces within Miami Beach. Shipping containers converted into mobile exhibition spaces have been set up on the beach for young, avant-garde galleries. Based at Art Positions in Collins Park at the Beach (Art Deco District), Art Perform will feature daily performances by international artists. The Art Sound Lounge, presented in association with PS1, New York, is also based at Art Positions in Collins Park. Between 2 and 10 p.m. interested visitors can take advantage of the open acoustic hoods among the palms to listen to audio pieces by contemporary artists.
Works in all media are represented at Art Basel Miami Beach and include paintings, drawings and editions to sculptures and installations as well as photography, performance, internet and video art.
In an opening night concert on 6 December at Collins Park Beach, next to Art Positions, Electro-punk icon Peaches, the Berlin based Canadian (born Merrill Nisker), will perform with her all-gal band, Samantha Maloney, Radio Sloan and Le Tigre’s JD Samson. Peaches caused a stir in July with the release of her new album Impeach My Bush.
