The Lisbon-Dakar rally pits 250 bikers, 187 cars and 88 trucks against each other in a grueling 15-day race over thousands of miles between Portugal and Senegal. In 2007, the rally starts in Lisbon on January 6 and then heads through Morocco, Mauritania, Mali and Senegal, where it will end on January 21.
The race starts at the Centro Cultural de Belém in Lisbon, and the first leg runs from Lisbon to the Algarve region, ending at the town of Portimão, where the Mediterranean sea crossing by boat to Africa takes place.
This year's competitors include Cyril Despres (KTM – Gauloises), Marc Coma (KTM – Repsol), Luc Alphand, Stéphane Peterhansel, Giniel De Villiers (2nd in 2006) and Carlos Sainz, Guerlain Chicherit, Jean-Louis Schlesser, Jutta Kleinschmid, four-time event winner Ari Vatanen of Finland among others.
