Major retrospective of the Philadelphia artist Thomas Eakins (1844 - 1916). The show features over 60 major oil paintings, as well as watercolors, drawings, sculptures, and 120 photographs by the artist and his circle, including his famous athletic scenes and portraits.
Trained in Paris by Bonnat and Gérôme, Thomas Eakins practised an art that was remarkable for its scientific rigour in representing typically American contemporary subjects, in particular the sporting life. Eakins's work is also crucial in investigating the relationship between painting and photography in the nineteenth century.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York is the final venue after Philadelphia and Paris.
