While collecting for more than 40 years Dr. Paul R. Jones has emerged as a leading advocate for art done by African-American artists. It has been his goal to ensure that these artists are included in the broader context of study of American art and artists. With this in mind Dr. Jones gifted a 1000 piece collection of artworkto the University of Delaware and the Paul R Jones Collectionwas established in February of 2001.
The Collection includes African-American artists of the 20th century such as Charles White, Herman "Kofi"Bailey, David Driskell, Elizabeth Catlett, Earl Hooks, Leo Twiggs, Stanley White, Jacob Lawrence, Romare Bearden, P.H. Polk andSelma Burke, who created the image of Franklin Delano Rooseveltthat appears on the dime. Selected paintings and other works of art from his existing collection are on view at the Lucy Craft Laney Museum.
