Ikuo Hirayama (b. 1930), a leading postwar Japanese-style painter born in Hiroshima Prefecture, repeatedly visited the route along which Buddhism had been introduced into China and Japan, as well as the Silk Road, an ancient trade route between China and the Mediterranean, to establish his unique style that may be called "history painting as landscape." This retrospective presents 80 important works spanning Hirayama's 60-year career, including The Transmission of Buddhism that brought the artist into prominence, recent pieces shown at Inten, as well as works related to his great mural in Yakushi-ji's Xuanzang Hall.
