Beginning with Sketches of Dreams (1994, Columbia), the Puerto Rican-born David Sanchez released seven albums as a leader including Coral (2004), devoted to the works of Brazilian and Argentine composers. Now signed to Concord Records, sanchez is the recipient of a grant from Chamber Music America to create a new composition, La Leyenda del Canaveral, that blends Afro-Caribbean and East African elements to accompany a poem written by his sister Margarita. The new work was premiered in March 2007 at the prestigious Centro de Bellas Artes in San Juan, Puerto Rico and performed in October at Zankel Hall in New York.
