Obo Addy, Francisco Aguabella, Joao Grande, Frisner Augustin
West African drumming and dance, Afro-Cuban percussion, Brazilian capoeira and Haitian vodou (voodoo) drumming are showcased in this program of traditions from Ghana and the African diaspora. Featured are Ghanian drummer/composer Obo Addy, known for his hot polyrhythmic drumming, and Okropong, his powerhouse group of musicians and dancers; conguero Francisco Aguabella, an elder statesman of Afro-Cuban percussion who has been active in the jazz scene since the ‘50s; Joao Grande, arguably the world’s foremost exponent of the breathtaking capoeira angola martial arts dance; and Haitian master drummer Frisner Augustin and his Troupe Makandal.
