Just as the Buena Vista Social Club resurrected the sound of the golden age of Cuban music, The Ipanemas revive classic Brazilian styles and the glory days of Copacabana’s hippest 1960s nightspots.
Combining swinging Afro-Brazilian bossa nova grooves and classic samba-cancao (vocal samba), the songs weave their nostalgic spell around the easy-on-the-ear voice of Wilson Das Neves and the exquisite guitar of Neco Wilson.
Their debut album "Os Ipanemas" was released in 1964 and blended samba-cancao, European jazz, and African music as well as incorporating traditional elements from Brazil, singing in Afro-Brazilian dialects and using African rhythms and instruments. The follow up, "The Return Of" was recorded almost 40 years later and confirmed their sound’s enduring mass appeal leading to "Samba is Our Gift" in 2006 and the full-blown phenomenon that is The Ipanemas.
There are rumors of a new album in 2008.
