Otto Dix: Portrait of Hugo Erfurth: Techniques and Secrets
SPAIN MADRID • Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza • 11 March - 18 May 2008 |
 |
The 20 works included in the exhibition reveal the mutual influences that grew up between Otto Dix and Hugo Erfurth as a consequence of their regular contacts. They introduce us to a key artistic debate of the middle years of the Weimar Republic concerning the respective merits of painting and photography and which was the superior art form. The exhibition analyses to what degree Dix’s realist style may have influenced Erfurth’s cool, objective portraits, and in contrast, to what extent Dix adopted certain elements characteristic of Erfurth’s photographic portraits. The show thus presents recent research undertaken by the Museum´s Restoration Department on the painting Hugo Erfuth with his Dog from the Permanent Collection. The painting forms the centrepiece of the exhibition.
