After a two-year restoration the Cuvilliés-Theater will reopen on 15 June 2008 with a new production of Mozart's Idomeneo.
Named after its architect François Cuvilliés the Elder, the rococo Cuvilliés-Theater was built in 1751-55 by Elector Maximilian Joseph III as his "new opera house". Originally reserved exclusively for members of court, the theatre lay in close proximity to the Residenz. Many lavish opera productions were mounted here, including the first performances of Mozart's Idomeneo, in 1781.
