The Bel canto or Belcanto Festival takes place from August 15-24 in Knowlton/Canada and from September 12-29 in Rome.
On Brome Lake in Knowlton six concerts are spread out over two weekends in a tent accomodating 600 spectators. Under the direction of Kent Nagano the Montreal Symphony Orchestra plays a concert version of Bellini’s Norma and gives a concert together with soprano June Anderson and four young singers from the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. Mezzo-soprano Jennifer Larmore and pianist Antoine Palloc join the festival in a recital, the coloratura soprano Sumi Jo is featured in a programme dedicated to Mozart, Rossini, Donizetti and Bellini and the well-known singer Gino Vannelli will do a show of Italian songs.
The festival includes free events: a concert by young singers from the Accademia Santa Cecilia Opera Studio, Atelier lyrique de l’Opéra de Montréal and a chamber music concert with musicians from the Montreal Symphony Orchestra and soprano Marianne Fiset, among others. In addition, master classes are offered by soprano June Anderson, mezzo-soprano Jennifer Larmore and Massimiliano Murrali.
In Rome the concert performance of Bellini’s Norma will be held a second time under the direction of Kent Nagano and the Orchestra dell’Accademia di Santa Cecilia. A Three Tenors style concert devoted to Belcanto works for tenor will be presented by John Osborn, Celso Albelo and Barry Banks. Mariella Devia will devote her program to the Great Scenes for Prima Donnas, Michele Pertusi will present a program entitled Rossini Fever and Cecilia Bartoli will concentrate on the repertoire of Maria Malibran.
