Rococo: A Riot of Ornament

Rococo: A Riot of Ornament: Decorative art in 18th-century Holland
NETHERLANDS
AMSTERDAM  •  Rijksmuseum  •  Ongoing

Elaborate panelling from Amsterdam canal houses, silver services from the court, garden statues, porcelain, glass and furniture - objects that were often hidden in private collections in the Netherlands and abroad - may be seen in a magical setting created by the leading Dutch theatre designer Paul Gallis. The works on view include a recently discovered silver service from the collection of the Grand Duke of Luxembourg, the only surviving example of a display service used at court in The Hague, and a complete set of panelling from a house on the Keizersgracht which has not been seen for thirty years.

On view in a special room at the end of the Rococo exhibition is a selection of Dutch costumes of the 18th century. Hoop skirts, embroidered waistcoats, fichus and corsets - all in splendid fabrics and exuberant colours - can be seen in this unusual presentation covering the key styles of dress during this period. Remarkable garments for both women and men are on view and also featured are the all-important underclothes and other items of dress.
