Daddy’s Girl: By Olli Kortekangas
FINLAND
HELSINKI  •  Finnish National Opera  •  Ongoing

The Finnish National Opera premieres its production of the opera Isän tyttö (Daddy’s Girl) by Olli Kortekangas, a two-act opera exploring the history of independent Finland through the eyes of women in three generations: a mother, a daughter and a grandmother. In the middle of all this is Anna, a girl who never saw her father, who was killed in the war.

Kortekangas says that "opera is at its best when it tells a story through the great emotions of a small person”. Daddy's Girl received its world premiere at the Savonlinna Opera Festival in 2007. The libretto was written by Kortekangas and Michael Baran.

The leading role of Anna, the fatherless girl, is sung alternately by Riikka Rantanen and Lilli Paasikivi. The rest of the cast includes Päivi Nisula and Taina Piira as Anna’s mother Siiri, Jaakko Kortekangas and Tommi Hakala as Anna’s father Urho who is killed in the war, and Mari Palo and Hanna-Leena Haapamäki as Anna’s daughter Vera. The premiere and three other performances will be conducted by Mikko Franck and
the rest of the performances by Kari Kropsu. The production is directed by Michael Baran and Anna Kelo. The set and lighting designer is Mikki Kunttu.

Apart from operas, Olli Kortekangas has more than 100 compositions in his catalogue, from miniatures to orchestral works. He was appointed composer-in-residence of the Oulu Sinfonia in 1997.

The work is performed in Finnish, with Finnish and English surtitles.
