Every year Romans celebrate the birth of Rome with a citywide festival that includes a historical parade, a competition to elect “Goddess Rome”, ceremonies, gladiator shows, traditional Roman banquets exhibitions and much more.
The anniversary of the foundation of Rome is traditionally celebrated on the 21st of April: according to the historian Varrone, indeed, the city was founded by Romulus on 21 April 753 B.C., and although there are no documents or findings confirming the truthfulness of this belief, the birth of Rome has traditionally been celebrated on this date.
Celebrations end on the 21 April with the ceremony of the “Tracing of the Furrow” at the Circus Maximus. Rome's monuments, archaeological sites and many museums allow free entry on this day.
