Ponticelli is a new project that the controversial Spanish artist Santiago Sierra (b. 1966, Madrid) conceived and executed in Naples. It deals with the Rome issue, in particular the recent events that took place in the Ponticelli neighbourhood, which reflect the sentiments of xenophobia and intolerance towards immigrants that is taking root in Italy and more in general in the western world in this time of global economic crisis. The project consists of three works on show at the museum in addition to a large public project that for the duration of a month (from mid-May to Mid-June 2009) will appear on several urban spaces that are generally reserved to ads, with a series of images taken by the artist.
The images show the grinding teeth of two Rome families, the last to remain before the definitive evacuation of the Ponticelli camp, who accepted to pose for the work. Sierra’s work is a sign of rage and despair, an outcry against all kinds of intolerance, an attempt to raise awareness on an helpless silence faced with the rising of hatred and fear. With a great commitment the artist reflects on issues such as acceptance of foreigners, tolerance and living together in moments of crisis when the all these issues become more pressing.
