In 2007 Heidi and Hans Kaufmann donated their significant collection of Southern Indian bronzes, from the Tulu region in the state of Karnataka, to the Museum Rietberg. Of particular interest are the large masks depicting benevolent spirits (butas), intended for use at festivals. The show is the first of its kind in a European museum. Photos and film footage document the contemporary practice of a venerable tradition.
