Am Anfang (Au commencement) Installation as part of the 20th anniversary of the Opéra Bastille
The finger of an instrumentalist pressing the string, the painful squeak of the bow, these are the sounds, drawn from a violin solo, that have inspired guest artist Anselm Kiefer’s installation. For the German artist, born into the ruins of war in 1945, this acoustic material differs little from sand, earth, soot, transposing into sound the chalk, hair and dust ever-present in his theatre of memory, obsessively urging us not to forget and to reject barbarism.
