Marcus Coates (born 1968), works with performance, film, photography, sound, paint and sculpture to explore the relationships between people and the animal kingdom.
Coates performs shamanic performances, where he communicates with animal spirits. He wears costumes for these acts, often involving animal parts such as stag and badger hides, a stuffed hare and a stuffed horse’s head. Selected costumes will be on display in the middle gallery.
Coates’ piece Dawn Chorus (2007) a major, multi-screen installation with footage of people mimicking birdsong will be on display in the Long Gallery. Comprising films of several singers that recreate birdsong in their ‘natural habitats’, the individuals were filmed in various every day locations such as a hotel room, an osteopathic clinic and a bath-tub. Each person was filmed mimicking a slowed down individual bird song, such as a chaffinch, pheasant or a yellowhammer. The video footage was then speeded up, returning the mimicry into its ‘real’ register.
