For Art Dubai 2010, Shanghai-based Contrasts Gallery presents paintings by a group of multi-disciplinary Chinese artists: Lan Zhenghui, Li Tianbing, Ma Han, Shao Yan, Wang Tiande, Wei Ligang, Zhang Hao, and Zhang Huan.
Lan Zhenghui, Shao Yan, Wang Tiande, Wei Ligang, and Zhang Hao contemporize the ancient art of Chinese ink brush painting, deconstructing and reassembling traditional Chinese modes of communication to comment on topical issues. Selected works by Li Tianbing, Ma Han and Zhang Huan likewise re-interpret established traditional Chinese artistic conventions through mediums such as ash, barbed wire, and oil paint to convey messages of personal and social struggle.
Raised in China but educated in France in the Western tradition of oil painting, Li Tianbing’s lively colorful portraits of children reference his cultural duality, memory and war. Contrasts Gallery will exhibit Li's work for the first time at Art Dubai 2010 in advance of a major solo exhibition at the gallery in September.
