Mondrian / De Stijl
PARIS  •  Centre Pompidou  •  Ongoing
This exhibition studies the interwoven progress of the artistic movement De Stijl and Piet Mondrian, its leading figure. Beginning towards the end of the century's first decade and continuing through the twenties, De Stijl combined an aesthetic and social vision, total art, which forms a basis for understanding the sources of modern art. In Paris between 1912 and 1938, Mondrian laid down a vocabulary and a "new abstract visual language" along with Theo Van Doesburg and Gerrit Rietveld, the other founders of this crossover movement which influenced painting, sculpture, city planning, architecture, furniture design and graphic design.
