Fahamu Pecou's latest series of paintings entitled ART HISTORY neXt finds the artist examining and appropriating famous images from the twentieth century and reinterpreting them through his own self-portrait prism.
In ART HISTORY neXt, Fahamu Pecou questions the concepts of inclusion and exclusion within the historical constructs of fine art.
Pecou's work continues to blur the lines between pop culture and fine art through his painting, video and performances that parallel marketing & branding campaigns and persona-building strategies found in contemporary media. His work continues to question traditionally held value systems in both popular culture and fine art by pushing beyond the recognized boundaries of both systems. The end result is one part parody and one part mockery, on society's obsession with celebrity, the exploitation of black masculinity and the divide that racial ignorance and stereotypes perpetuate.
