Dogon area (Mali) art ranks among the best known art created by African cultures.
Along with the masterpieces that have brought fame to Dogon art, this major loan exhibition presents objects from cultural and daily life spanning from the 10th century until today that reflect the metaphysical and aesthetic concerns of the populations who made them. Some 330 pieces from international collections are on view.
Visitors should note that the Dogon only number about 200, 000 today and are spread out over a number of villages in central Mali. Coveted by collectors, Dogan art has been the target of theft and speculation in the art markets of Europe and America.
