Ingres to Matisse: The Triumph of French Painting
ENGLAND
LONDON  •  Royal Academy of Arts  •  30 June - 23 September 2001

Consisting of some fifty 19th- and early 20th-century French masterpieces, this exhibition is drawn from the collections of two major American art institutions, based in Baltimore: the Walters Art Museum and The Baltimore Museum of Art. These benefited respectively from the collections of William and Henry Walters and Etta and Claribel Cone. Opening with work by Ingres and Delacroix, the exhibition explores the classical legacy of the former and the experimental colourism of the latter. Delacroix's palette provided an essential model for the Impressionists, represented with work by Manet, Monet, Degas and Pissarro. Including work by Cézanne, Gauguin and Van Gogh, the exhibition illustrates how these painters laid the foundations for the individual approaches of Picasso and Matisse.
