Claus Peymann kauft sich eine Hose und geht mit mir essen
Thomas Bernhard, text Karl-Ernst Herrmann, set design
with Maria Happel, Hermann Beil, Claus Peymann Berliner Ensemble
A leading light of Vienna's Burgtheater from 1986 to 1999, the director of the Berliner Ensemble, Claus Peymann, plays himself in this play by Thomas Bernhard. The Austrian playwright, who has often denounced his country's Nazi past and nationalist tendencies, has written one of his ambiguous plays for his colleague, with the amusing title Claus Peymann kauft sich eine Hose und geht mit mir essen (Claus Peymann buys himself a pair of trousers and goes for something to eat with me). The funny text includes numerous references to recent Austrian history and culture.
