The Czech Republic is not the only country in Central Europe where string quartets flourish: Hungary, too, has many fine quartets. Since its foundation in 1975 the Takacs Quartet has travelled the world, performing in leading international concert halls and at numerous festivals. Since 1983 it has been in residence at the University of Colorado in Boulder. The evening's programme opens with one of Haydn's most celebrated quartets, known as "The Lark". Janacek's poignant Second Quartet is at the heart of the programme; it will be followed by Ravel's Quartet, one of the composer's masterpieces.
