Karlheinz Stockhausen: Mittwoch aus Licht (World premiere)
A commission for the London 2012 Festival, produced by Birmingham Opera Company
German composer Karlheinz Stockhausen’s final opera of the monumental opera cycle LICHT, receives its world premiere performance, directed by Graham Vick and staged by Birmingham Opera Company, as part of London 2012 Festival. For the first time, all six parts of MITTWOCH AUS LICHT featuring two choirs, flying solo instrumentalists, live electronic and acoustic music and a string quartet streamed live from four flying helicopters will be staged together in its entirety. (Argyle Works, Birmingham, 22 Aug - 25 Aug 2012). The famous Helicopter String Quartet will be broadcast for free at London 2012 Live Sites in both Birmingham and Coventry and streamed live on The Space digital arts service between 19:00 and 20:00(times approx) on Wednesday 22 August, direct from the world premiere performance.
The entire opera will be available via a free webcast on Birmingham Opera Company website (http://www.birminghamopera.org.uk) on Thurdsay 23 August from 16:00.
This event will take place in the Argyle Works, a former chemical plant and venue for Birmingham Opera Company’s production of Verdi’s Othello.
Of his monumental achievement Licht, (Light) a cycle of 7 operas, one for each day of the week, Mittwoch (Wednesday) is the only part of the cycle that Stockhausen never saw staged.
