Yue Minjun
FRANCE PARIS • Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain • 14 November 2012 - 17 March 2013 |
 |
One of the leading figures in the Beijing-based movement of "Cynical Realism" that emerged following the 1989 student demonstrations in Tiananmen Square, Yue Minjun has since become a pioneering figure in Chinese contemporary art. Parlaying his iconic smiling self-portrait into his signature motif, he has gained an international following. Yue Minjun and the Symbolic Smile features bronze and polychrome sculptures, paintings and drawings.
The Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain presents the first major European exhibition dedicated to the Chinese artist. Featuring nearly 40 paintings from collections around the world, as well as a wide array of drawings that have never been shown to the general public, this exhibition reveals the singular and complex aesthetic of an oeuvre that at times defies all interpretation.
