The Copenhagen Jazz Festival presents more than 600 concerts throughout the day and evening in open-air concerts, cafes and major venues throughout the city in clubs and theatres and outdoors in parks and town squares, but also covers Frederiksberg and Nørrebro, Vesterbro and Østerbro as well as Amager, Rødovre and Valby. Many of the performances are free.
This year’s headliners are among others: Marcus Miller, Joe Lovano, Dianne Reeves, Billy Cobham, Cassandra Wilson, Arturo Sandoval, Macy Gray & David Murray, Medeski, Martin & Wood, Charles Lloyd, Bill Frisell, Tomasz Stanko – not to forget the official pre-event this Tuesday night with the 72-year-old piano icon Chick Corea.
The programme counts a total of 1200 concerts and reflects considerable diversity from modern jazz, vocal, traditional, avant-garde to fusion or a semi-electronic variant.
Two new themes have found there way to the 2013 festival: The Sound of New Orleans takes the temperature on one of the most important jazz cities in Pressen (Politikens Hus) and Jazz Against the Machine mixes classic jazz with electronica in Skuespilhuset.
The 2013 Copenhagen Jazz Festival poster (left image) is the work of the Danish sculptor, painter and street artist Søren Behncke (born 1976) who currently has an exhibition at Gallery V1 in Copenhagen. Behncke also uses the aliases Papfar and Posemanden when his art intervenes with public space.
Every year since 1982, the Copenhagen Jazz Festival has chosen a Danish artist to create the official festival poster, and today these posters have become collector’s items.
