The Time of Modernity: Hungarian painting between 1905 and 1925
ROME  •  Galleria nazionale d'arte moderna e contemporanea  •  25 June - 15 September 2013
The circa 100 works on view attempt to document two artistic poles of research: on the one hand artists who sought contact with the Avant-garde, Modernity and foreign influences; the second pole were those who never lost touch with tradition, folklore and local ambience. The first section of the exhibition is dedicated to the painters close to the school of Nagybánya (now Baia Mare, Romania), who opposed the academic historical painting, and were called the Neo-Impressionists or simply the Neo. The first part of the show ends whit a retour to order between the two wars. But the heart of the exhibition is made up by the Avant-garde painters, in particular by the Group of the Eight who went in search of an autonomous artistic programme. Their compositions were based on art's own principles of form and the research of balance.
