“This is about identity. Feminine, northern identity, or weird, multiple identity. Any kind of identity.”
The art of Sanna Kekäläinen is queer within its genre: instead of typical contemporary dance, it is a totally idiosyncratic, performative art form. Pitting itself against traditional gender divisions and the conventions of contemporary dance, Kekäläinen’s new work explores the diversity and multiple meanings of humanity and identity.
Sanna Kekäläinen has featured in Kiasma throughout its existence. One of the main concerns of her artistic work is to explore how much information and thinking can be expressed through movement. According to Kekäläinen, motion is just as precise an instrument for expression and thinking as any other form of communication. Kekäläinen has developed a method of writing with and within dance, and she also incorporates the written and spoken word into contemporary dance.
Sanna Kekäläinen is known for experimental and even controversial works that have had considerable impact on the development of contemporary Finnish dance ever since the 1980s.
