Yo-Yo Ma joins fellow cellist and Silk Road collaborator Giovanni Sollima to premiere his newly commissioned Concerto for Two Cellos.

Born 24 October 1962 in Palermo into a family of musicians, Giovanni Sollima studied cello with Giovanni Perriera and Antonio Janigro and composition with his father Eliodoro Sollima and Milko Kelemen.

As composer, Giovanni Sollima composes for acoustic and electric instruments, and others invented by himself or created for him. Sollima's influences are wide ranging, taking in jazz and rock, as well as various ethnic traditions from the Mediterranean bassin. His music is influenced by minimalism, with his compositions often featuring modal melodies and repetitive structures.

Giovanni Sollima plays a cello by Francesco Ruggeri (Cremona, 1679).
