Lully, Purcell, Rosenmüller
The Catalan musician and early music specialist Jordi Savall spearheaded the renaissance of the viola da gamba as an instrument in the 1970s, and has continued to broaden the repertoire ever since. His recent CD entitled Music of the Borgia Dynasty – Church and Power in the Renaissance follows the history of the family which, from the 11th to the 17th century, gave the world both murderers and patrons of the arts (sometimes in the same person) and reached its peak as a dynasty when one of its members, Rodrigo Borgia, was elected pope in 1492.
