Neue Pinakothek : European painting and sculpture of the 18th and 19th centuries GERMANY MUNICH • Neue Pinakothek • on-going
The heart of the collection of around 4500 paintings and 300 sculptures is the private collection of Ludwig I, which is dominated by landscapes, genre and historical paintings. Ludwig I began collecting contemporary paintings in the 1820s, and had a museum built in the late classical style from private funds between 1846 and 1853. Following the destruction of this building in 1944/45, the new building – which was based on plans by the architect Alexander Freiherr von Branca – was opened in 1981.
