Global Village: The 60s
MONTRÉAL  •  Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal  •  Ongoing
The exhibition is based on the idea that the 1960s was a turning point in history that revolutionized our view of the human condition, following the launch of the satellite Sputnik in 1957 (a reconstruction of which is on view). Images of the Earth seen from space and the idea that human beings are passengers on Spaceship Earth profoundly transformed traditional notions of space, time and habitat. In addition, the rapid development of the media gave rise to the broadcasting of information and sent an endless stream of images around the planet. The "global village" was born and with it, the consumer society — and global disorder. The 1960s was a time of turmoil that unmasked traditional authority and led to a worldwide questioning of old regimes that stood for repression and segregation, all under the watchful eye of the television camera. More than ever, people felt the need to change the world.

This thematic, multidisciplinary exhibition will be built around four major themes: Space, Media, Disorder and Change. The show features some 230 works of art, design, photography, fashion and architecture.
