Currents 89: Toba Khedoori
UNITED STATES
SAINT LOUIS  •  Saint Louis Art Museum  •  Ongoing

Part of the Saint Louis Art Museum's Currents series on contemporary art, this exhibition is devoted to work by Toba Khedoori. Her art is located at the interstice between drawing, painting, and installation. Made with oil paint on 6 x 12 feet sheets of wax-coated paper, Khedoori’s work resonates first and foremost through its sheer monumentality, which tends to fill one’s entire field of vision. Often large parts of the wax-coated paper are left blank, underscoring the notion that these images are supported by their own spatial reality. Best known for architectural subjects, Khedoori has recently augmented her visual repertoire with subjects from nature, including mountains, rocks, and rain. Both the cityscapes and the natural subjects are painted from drawings of photographs or models rather than rendered from a site that has been directly observed. Whether understood as drawing, painting, or sculpture, Khedoori’s layered yet pared-down works are meditations on the physical and psychological mechanics of perception.

Toba Khedoori was born in Sydney, Australia, and lives in Los Angeles. She was chosen as a MacArthur Fellow in 2002.
